Because it is low-growing and has thin stems and a wiry habit, don't crowd it because vigorous neighboring plants might choke it out. Give it excellent drainage in a pot and good air circulation. Here's how to plant your tomato deep in the ground: (This applies whether you're growing in the ground, in a raised bed, or in a container.) These extra roots strengthen the plant so that it can support more fruit and is better able to survive hot weather.

This goes against everything you've ever heard about "don't plant too deep or you'll kill the plant." Tomatoes break that rule because they actually have the ability to sprout additional roots along the buried stem. Why? Because the plant will have a better, stronger root system.

That means that if you buy a 10-inch tall plant, all but the top 3 to 4 inches is buried.
